Operational Overview
Enics is one of the largest global EMS companies focused on complex industrial solutions. Their mission is profound: to make the world a better place together with their partners. Enics is dedicated to driving the sustainable success of their customers. Enics emphasizes holistic sustainability, with the everyday work of its 3400 employees in eight facilities across Europe and Asia guided by principles stated in the Enics Code of Conduct and other company policies. The customer base is 71% Europe, 24% Asia and 5% in the Americas. 2020 revenues were €502M; for 2021 they are estimated to be €530-535M.
Company Differentiators
Enics’ engineering talent is an important differentiator. Their people are driven to find solutions and continuously work with customers to improve their products and processes. At Enics, the goal is to increase the value of customers’ business with joint product lifecycle management. They believe that “working in parallel is the new Lean in Industrial Electronics. Our customers appreciate our holistic ideas and proven processes that optimize all aspects of a product’s value: cost, time-to-market, and quality.”
In addition, the sustainability focus is not just for show, but it reaches to all ESG aspects, including also sustainable supply chains and social responsibility. Enics sees environmental responsibility as an important driver of the development of the company operations, capabilities and services. Throughout the organization they focus on waste reduction, recycling, offering product lifecycle extension services, and situating production close to our customers and suppliers. These actions are intended to reduce the environmental footprint of the company.
Strategic Growth Drivers
Enics lists these as their key market segments: Power, Drives, Safety & Security, Building Technology, Elevators & Escalators, Transportation, Industrial Automation, Instrumentation & Measurement, and more recently and increasing number of Medical customers. They continue to increase the digitalization of their data and metrics, e.g. in the ‘Enics Life’ digital platform for customers. They will have one ERP system across all eight facilities by the end of 2023. Regionalization is a major focus for their customers and will continue to drive growth for their strategically placed manufacturing facilities.
Facility Tour: Elva, Estonia
EMSNOW On Tour visited Enics’ busy Elva, Estonia facility in December 2021. This facility started in a garage on the site 30 years ago. Currently there are more than 850 people in two areas of over 13,000 square meters. 9,000 of that is assembly. When we visited the plant, some of the cells were running 24/7. Like most companies, Enics is challenged by supply chain issues. They buy 70% of their components through distribution and are learning hard lessons about the importance of demand planning, as many EMS are during the crisis. Other than supply chain, they are also challenged to find skilled workers, and are bringing in people from outside the EU. It’s been challenging getting the assembly equipment they need to keep up with strong demand. The opportunities are very robust, with more OEMs in complex electronics deciding to outsource this higher value work; medical electronics was a key growth driver before the pandemic.
